Most of us spend our days performing in roles that are somehow defined for us. It's rare to get a moment to feel like yourself.

A portrait session at my studio gives you the space to put the performance aside. We talk, I photograph, and from this something genuine will appear. I'll catch that.

A PORTRAIT SESSION PLANNED WITH YOU

A lot of the work happens before you arrive. We sit down beforehand and talk about who's being photographed, what it's for, and where the pictures might hang. By the time you arrive for the portrait session, there's nothing left to worry about.

The studio is large enough to have your own space but small enough to feel connected. If you're having your hair and makeup done, that's where the day starts, nobody walks straight onto the set. With families, the younger ones usually go first, and once you see they're fine, everyone relaxes.

It's natural to feel a little awkward for the first five to ten minutes. But it won't take long to settle into yourself.

MADE TO BE KEPT

Most photographs end up on a phone or a hard drive and are rarely looked at again.

My philosophy is that the photograph is not complete until it's in print, and that's what my practice is focused on.

Framed pieces for the wall, and boxes of art-mounted prints you can take out, pass around, and go through with your family years from now. The boxes are handmade in Italy. Framed pieces are printed on archival cotton rag paper, set in solid timber frames behind UV protective glass that cuts reflection.

They're made to be lived with.

I'M MATT

I've spent most of my time photographing people. Over 100 weddings with the bride and groom, family and friends, on their most important day. And years photographing models and talent in fashion and advertising, with full teams of stylists, hair and makeup artists.

Today, I bring the same intent to individuals, couples and families who may have never been in front of a camera like this before. For me, portraiture offers an opportunity to create something meaningful that lasts longer than the swipe of a thumb.

I've been photographing out of my studio for 15 years, music is always playing, coffee on the go, gallery-style prints cover the walls, lots of chat and energy for you to connect with.
